Long before disposable cardboard coasters existed, 19th-century taverns across Bavaria relied on a far more durable, natural solution: Bierfilzl. The word translates to “beer felt.”



Up until the late 19th century, wool felt coasters were a tavern staple across the region. They not only served to protect the furniture from unsightly rings, but also kept out falling leaves and uninvited flying guests from cold pints. The invention of thick paper coasters in the 1880s marked the demise of their felt counterparts, but happily, the original name stuck. To this day, Bavarians still call coasters of all kinds Bierfilzl.
